I never met a break I didn't like, so when break time rolled around (never soon enough) someone might come looking for me. To ease their curiosity, I bought a $4 sign from Wal-Mart shown above, and moved the hands to my end-of-break time before placing it on or about my work station for that day.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I've often said I HATE IT when bloggers publish a post with the phrase, "Haven't posted anything in a while" because it's so disappointing to read that phrase. This Fast Food and Trains blogger has been on duty for 11 years, with a relaxed posting schedule of only a few posts per year, but now it's break time. I'm not saying I won't be back, it's just that I'm taking a break to focus on other pursuits.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Thanks for reading along these 204 posts, for your thoughts on 53,000+ views and 33 comments as we've explored the inextricably-woven topics of fast food and well, trains. They always go together well, and always will. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Enjoy! And maybe my little plastic sign will be flipped over to show break time's over:</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Eric<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRmfei6YHSTr2lXI_wnODQKHzQWXqpnTEyD-HLoytYervRw0vn-DDI6ACoHFlVfMJ2Oo1FaYMXtZZMrw_lx_qHreykZXeLjcWmKJTYQL6Y-9B7I3FCfZ2qaWkyozy57gI8_7STCRFOH1uQ4OrlEKjHCWQ2AplIT4Cku0ly9cWcPSkQPVnbr0A7CDU1JiQ/s1436/aaa.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1436" data-original-width="1206" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRmfei6YHSTr2lXI_wnODQKHzQWXqpnTEyD-HLoytYervRw0vn-DDI6ACoHFlVfMJ2Oo1FaYMXtZZMrw_lx_qHreykZXeLjcWmKJTYQL6Y-9B7I3FCfZ2qaWkyozy57gI8_7STCRFOH1uQ4OrlEKjHCWQ2AplIT4Cku0ly9cWcPSkQPVnbr0A7CDU1JiQ/w168-h200/aaa.jpg" width="168" /></a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOvpDBGrhruf8b6_ukQEyoobpMT1z7ztx_VCvtMEoOkyCBEV9gr80lFXZl-2nvcGhf6u60Id8VgAe4emGvMtRUxZZh4RLclzaLYv1iCVXeOZxe_TtA0fM3Y6USej8463JDZzysWgL0hV-IsIGj5oRLu257U2D-Rd8qEuT557s2anwpy3_9GPWvm-nnWRk/s1436/aaa.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaIELKavhoHvCqSVE1ydfhdoqnkDQoUNgD_surAElP3FhJG91dYHt6N-Q9K08OVzRxvfID6bKiVRnq4BY-2I7OaKswooKyuIvoNt6k47oZYOVlTqtW8PoO4lwTCYZ913pQEaCY-dAMFTkHww6L83xD_Z5LWt7ACWTDkVmvnvIjBc_gc0IZHCWkydduA7c/s1457/aa.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a></div>Erichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11822288099043790296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751879034099278956.post-91908997641838908722023-08-10T09:05:00.000-04:002023-08-10T09:05:06.205-04:00A Whopper of a Wall!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJmAPgu4r5-uxbTdOT8KNkAoT7n2Zh-Rpf82LNhk4QgMQDRK82kQAYdTaF3KEslZnrAmSGXJL2Qe23CxRDIj1SMkG6oWpV9vNT7etpRQvrUr0ZYz6WZ325c8ngM3VKXdAcO2uBKMhGMUueZa-DNQPsmha3abud4_ORyBAg8xTqPaRwBOcgg1LLKcLWhMI/s4032/IMG_7288.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJmAPgu4r5-uxbTdOT8KNkAoT7n2Zh-Rpf82LNhk4QgMQDRK82kQAYdTaF3KEslZnrAmSGXJL2Qe23CxRDIj1SMkG6oWpV9vNT7etpRQvrUr0ZYz6WZ325c8ngM3VKXdAcO2uBKMhGMUueZa-DNQPsmha3abud4_ORyBAg8xTqPaRwBOcgg1LLKcLWhMI/w640-h480/IMG_7288.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Willingly I went with appetite whetted for Whopper Wednesday. There is Strawberry Syndrome (SS), Lemon Meringue Pie Syndrome (LMPS) and some others I'll blog later, but I'll tell you here about Grilled Cheese Syndrome (GCS). </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">After a Picton train show, we went with my Dad to the Picton McDonald's. There, in the ordering line-up, looking at the menu sign with with its little slide-in letters, I asked my Dad what I could order him for lunch. "Oh, I'll just have the Grilled Cheese", was his reply. Grilled Cheese? Wow, I thought, dementia is starting to kick in! Is he casting his memory back to an earlier time? Since when does McDonald's have Grilled Cheese? Next, he'll be asking for the Tunafish Sandwich!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I gently suggested the Hamburger or Cheeseburger, knowing that he preferred to order the least-expensive menu item. No, he persisted, the Grilled Cheese would be fine. OK, now I was desperate to show his misunderstanding, to make sense of his nonsensical (I thought!) menu order.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I cast around for a diplomatic son solution. And then I saw it, way up in the top-left corner. "Grilled Cheese $1.29". No wonder he was so steadfast in his request. It was right there for all of us to see, but I was so sure he was mistaken that I was in fact the mistaken one! He probably thought nothing of it, but maybe in his mind he was thinking, "What's wrong with this kid??"</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The GCS occurs when you blindly insist you know better than another person, discounting their unique viewpoint.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwlW8jorK0vuo5fzLaVc8sM_zdrwVAyR_822YvnTheJFsOSZzgNI2jWhU2CEqJ2q_K60BiNkmKq2-l2Ish9EnNz4Uo2D_oUVKgdeDSU_ZcyNZB2FYUbbdmW4itZMRo1uao5rXnO4A1xyc2RMaVNPhB47ctKiqfLrHj9sSD19XgirMwcCOgMdD3ORz_/s300/aa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="300" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwlW8jorK0vuo5fzLaVc8sM_zdrwVAyR_822YvnTheJFsOSZzgNI2jWhU2CEqJ2q_K60BiNkmKq2-l2Ish9EnNz4Uo2D_oUVKgdeDSU_ZcyNZB2FYUbbdmW4itZMRo1uao5rXnO4A1xyc2RMaVNPhB47ctKiqfLrHj9sSD19XgirMwcCOgMdD3ORz_/s1600/aa.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>The Grilled Cheese Happy Meal was discontinued some years ago. Perhaps it's still available on McDonald's secret menu, which is a nice way of saying if they're not too busy, and the manager is OK with it, you can special-order non-menu items. After all, it's just two slices of cheese on a toasted bun, and you pay the full Cheeseburger price. And I know you can order a Big Mac with everything but meat. And pay full price. Tim Hortons is becoming a mecca for Timbit fans who want to take it to the next sugary level.</div><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">They're 70 cents more for ten. That's $3.19 of over-the-topness. It's like regular Timbits had a roll in the glaze and picked up whatever is left on the baking sheet. In an attempt to reclaim the high ground, and to keep the competition from eating their lunch, they're focusing on coffee and breakfast. Enough of these ill-fated menu experiments of various sandwiches, meat-free options and frankly, what does a guy have to do to get a cup of coffee around here?<p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Nevermind the franchisee wars, the pandemic and a host of other niggling problems that have beset Tims. Someday.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Till then, next time you order a Tims breakfast sandwich (you can have mine, I'm not eggsactly an egg-lover!), pry back the layers and look for your freshly-cracked egg, replacing the "multi-ingredient egg omelette" of yore.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Yore always got time, for Tim Hortons!</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Enjoy!</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Eric</p>Erichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11822288099043790296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751879034099278956.post-33514785991592655082021-04-12T11:22:00.004-04:002021-04-12T11:22:23.861-04:00Grilled Cheeses Murphy!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcXzhb6noMNT2RipQ1h2mZp4nQGfIXtVLz6QR6mXleJNTEJhO_0Cm_jqduQReJTCo4IbMTwjpjhcDrBDA01BJQMvuD8sp5yMKYvyQrIGfo_0IGbalzlVi6ZRQKOl51xH7LGrnHGIb1q3k/s484/AA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="326" data-original-width="484" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcXzhb6noMNT2RipQ1h2mZp4nQGfIXtVLz6QR6mXleJNTEJhO_0Cm_jqduQReJTCo4IbMTwjpjhcDrBDA01BJQMvuD8sp5yMKYvyQrIGfo_0IGbalzlVi6ZRQKOl51xH7LGrnHGIb1q3k/s320/AA.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p>On this, National Grilled Cheese Day, I'm reminded of Grilled Cheese Syndrome, a self-named syndrome which deals with perceptions of others, more than it does the sandwich by that name. It all began some years ago, after a train show, as we proceeded to McDonald's for lunch. When at the decision-point at the counter, my Dad told me he'd like a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Though he was advancing in years, I wondered about his cognitive abilities, and I tried to talk him out of it.</p><p>Wouldn't he like a Big Mac instead? It's my treat. No, he'd just have the grilled cheese sandwich. Now I seriously doubted that McDonald's even sold grilled cheese, and he must have somehow been imagining they did. Then I saw it, way up in the corner of the menu board: 'Grilled Cheese $1.25'. My Dad had a habit of ordering the least expensive item on the menu, especially if someone else was footing the bill. He would have ordered a 'tuna-fish sandwich' if it was on the menu, but the grilled cheese was the next best thing!</p><p>I shouldn't have doubted him. It was my abilities of perception, not his powers of cognition that led to this brief moment of misunderstanding. I learned that humility is something he passed on to me; something I should use more. Every day. And not just on National Grilled Cheese Day! </p><p>Enjoy!</p><p>Eric</p><p> </p>Erichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11822288099043790296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751879034099278956.post-20147071710821024022021-03-16T21:31:00.004-04:002021-03-16T21:33:01.990-04:00The Food That Built America<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVLtcctJUeQRfMHOSD3pWs3fcgEiyYGuuWrDPWdCNVCtqWx6hJr5T6j-sfDqnJBut3O5pA0_OCi08HzUSVic9CLYQQDbOvk-bBS-pQ22vMa5Ge-v_FsnrwTIoJecOHuwGDGL_m0DzrC0/s1600/aa.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVLtcctJUeQRfMHOSD3pWs3fcgEiyYGuuWrDPWdCNVCtqWx6hJr5T6j-sfDqnJBut3O5pA0_OCi08HzUSVic9CLYQQDbOvk-bBS-pQ22vMa5Ge-v_FsnrwTIoJecOHuwGDGL_m0DzrC0/w640-h480/aa.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Or gave it atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. Enjoying season two on History Channel. I always liked Heinz. Squashed in Leamington, Ontario for decades. Multinational Kraft Heinz Co. decided to shutter the plant in 2014, throwing 740 workers out of work and moving production to the U.S. Thus began the 'Condiment Wars'. I relished the thought of what an interesting post this could be, so I mustered the energy to write this.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Now, the firm's flagship Mount Royal, Quebec will be gearing up production to produce 13,000,000 one-litre bottles per year in 2021. Only 30 jobs will be created. Over 98 per cent of the Canadian market for the company's product will be made here, instead of the current Fremont, Ohio facility. Fifty million pounds of tomatoes for production in Mount Royal will be imported annually from the U.S. in the short term. Cross-border vegetables!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Leamington used to process half of the entire Ontario tomato crop. The gutters ran red with water from their cleaning. Canadians clung tightly to the Heinz heritage, even boycotting French's, the rival former mustard magnet. North American ketchup konsumption is up 20 per cent since the Condiment Wars began. Canadian ketchup sales will top $200 million this year. That's a lot of red that should keep the producing companies in the black, while keeping Canadian condiment supply chains running.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Enjoy!</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Eric</div><p></p>Erichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11822288099043790296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751879034099278956.post-37636045922656840362020-09-14T09:23:00.001-04:002020-09-14T09:23:04.122-04:00Do nut Delay!<p style="text-align: justify;">Go to Coffee Way Donuts today!
